Photo a day 2026!
This is my second year of doing a photo a day year long project. At the start of the year I thought I would not continue with this large project this year and lighten the load whilst trying to focus on career outside of photography and creative photographic projects. BUT For a week after deciding this I was very glum until I realised why. I value so much the photos I took last year of my little boys. The moments that I felt at the time weren’t “artistic” enough moments to warrant the big camera actually turned out to be my favourite images from the year when I look back. Like my boys doing basic things like eating their morning cereal together. I’m still editing some photos from last year but I’m still clicking away capturing this year and have manage to get some golden nuggets. This year I'll give myself permission to include phone photos but aim to use my Nikon as much as possible, hopefully I'll stay on top of things and wont feel the need to use my phone. My photography moved leaps and bounds by picking up my camera almost every day last year. This year again like the last I will give myself grace to take photos each day or a bunch on the weekend if needed. As long as I end the year with 365 photos spread across the year of our family.
I’m a list girly and so I need to keep track of my project to keep my head clear and not feel overwhelmed. This way I can break it down into bite size pieces. Get inspiration when needed, take notes and tick off in the check boxes when I’ve taken an image and when I’ve done a final edit. With my lists I don’t have the guilt that I’m not “up to date” because it’s all there and once a month I dedicate a day to sorting it and building my photo book to print as I go along...hopefully haha or just wait to do my book in the new year.
After editing I export and save my photos in a folder together. I label each one P365-001 etc. This year being my second year of doing a P365 I might actually put the year at the start so that they stay together and in order if ever moved around on my computer. So I’ll go 2026P365-001 and so on.
So I’ve got below my check list I’ve made myself to track along with this years project. I plan to take a photo a day and also have a photo a month that I plan out and is more creative. This will still count as one of my photos a day. For January my monthly portrait will be a planned and set up image doing my youngest son’s hair because it’s so long and he’ll have his first hair cut soon. I’ll share my monthly portraits to my socials and a few glimpses of my P365 but most of my photo a day is for our family, for a year long album my boys can flick through and remember our home and surrounds at this stage in life. Cheers
